Geneva, 22/05/2001 (Agence Europe) - A WTO panel decided to postpone until 22 June (thus after the EU/United States Summit on 14 June in Gothenburg) its preliminary decision on the legality of the American FSC legislation - Foreign Sales Corporations - challenged by the EU. If the WTO, whose final decision is expected for mid-August, confirms that this legislation, which grants tax breaks to American exporting companies, represents an illegal subsidy to exports, the EU could call on the World Trade Organisation to authorise sanctions on American exports for USD 4.043 billion per year (see in EUROPE of 16 May, p.12, statements by Mr Zoellick on this issue).
