Solana tells Annan of his concern - EU condemns bombing of Kfar Saba

London / Brussels, 23/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Union's High Representative for Cfsp, Javier Solana, met UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in London on Sunday, with whom he discussed in particular, other than EU-United Nations relations, the situation in the Middle East. A press release recalls that Solana has been in constant contact with the two parties since his meeting, in Athens two weeks ago, with Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and two representatives of the Palestinian Authority Nabil Shaath and Saeb Erekat. According to the press release, the High Representative placed emphasis on the need for a political solution and stated that "the aim now is to see how security and economic conditions can improve in the hope that the road to negotiations can be reopened".

In addition, the Swedish Presidency, on behalf of the EU on Sunday, condemned the explosive attack committed the same day by a kamakaze against a bus and that left two dead and many wounded in Kfar Saba, North of Tel Aviv. Here is the declaration: "All terrorist attacks must be condemned, also the one of Kfar Saba on 22 April; condemned because such attacks are aimed at innocent bystanders and at derailing negotiations, the only road to peace".
