Committee on Freedoms hopes to preserve sacro-sanct principle of confidentiality

Brussels, 02/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - Next Wednesday, the EP will discuss at second reading the report by German Christian Democrat Klaus-Heiner Lehne on prevention of the use of the financial system for the purpose of money laundering. Placing emphasis on safeguarding the principle of confidentiality, the report stresses the need to restrict the obligation for the legal professions to inform the public authorities of suspect transactions (see EUROPE of 29 September 2000).
