Brussels, 02/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - On 29 March, the European Commission adopted an intervention plan with EUR 11 million in order to help Sierra Leon to face the persistent humanitarian needs. The funds will be allocated by ECHO, the EU humanitarian office, to partner organisations working in the country, and will enable to continue to bring support to the victims of the present crisis throughout the year. The conflict in Sierra Leon and in the regions has lead to the displacement of some 450,000 people. The plan is centred around three main axis: 1) integrated assistance aims at displaced persons covering the basic needs (water, sanitation, health care, food, etc.); 2) specific aid addressed to children, women and amputees; 3) coordination and operational assistance to organisation working on the ground. The decision limits itself to Sierra Leon and does not take into account the refugees living camps in the neighbouring countries, who are the object of separate provisions.
