Brussels, 02/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - Three experts from European "accidental maritime pollution" Task Force, where sent, this week, to Denmark to take part in the clean-up operations after the sinking of the Baltic Carrier oil tanker off the Danish coast, announced the Environment Commissioner Margot Wallström. The experts (two French and a European civil servant) will also answer the call by Denmark. The experience acquired by the French experts during the sinking of the Erika, which also concerned heavy fuel, should be made available to the Danish, added the Commission in a press release.
Grounded on 29 March on the south of the Mons Islands, 100 km from Copenhagen, the Baltic Carrier lost some 2,700 tonnes of fuel out of 30,000 in its cargo. The clean-up operations have until now allowed to gather 930m3 of oil at sea and 380 tonnes on the coast, indicates the Commission. The Task Force was created in 1985 and has intervened a dozen times since its creation.
