Brussels, 21/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - Three Democratici di Sinistra (Mr D'Alema's party) MEPs, Bruno Trentin, Pasqualina Napoletano and Fiorella Ghilardotti, have expressed concern about the content of the joint letter by Mr Blair and Mr D'Alema in preparation for the Summit (see yesterday's EUROPE, page 15). This letter seems to count exclusively on labour market and wage flexibility as the "cure-all for stimulating employment". "What employment", ask the MEPs, who fear that this bilateral contribution could weaken the position of Mr Guterres and "cast a shadow on the credibility of our government", as it is the "antithesis of the text adopted officially by Italy for the Summit". The three MEPs therefore hope the positions set out in the Blair/D'Alema letter "can be revised and corrected in the coming hours".
