21/01/2000 (Agence Europe) - Following the visit by his Greek counterpart George Papandreou to Ankara (the first Greek Minister for Foreign Affairs in nearly forty years), the Turkish Minister for Foreign Affairs Ismail Cem. He indicated to the press: "We have suggested a range of confidence boosting measures", including a reduction in the number of respective military exercises, the disarmament of military planes flying over the Aegean and the organisation of courtesy visits by Greek and Turkish war ships in the ports. Mr. Papandreou specified that he also proposed creating a committee formed with military and expert representatives in the two countries to examine military questions. Furthermore the Turkish Prime Minister Mr. Ecevit invited his Greek counterpart Mr. Simitis to Turkey.
