The European Union, through the High Representative of the EU, “unequivocally” condemned “the aggression” carried out on 19 July by Iranian security forces against two diplomats of the French embassy in Tehran.
“Such acts constitute a blatant violation of the Vienna Conventions and jeopardise the very conduct of diplomatic relations”, the High Representative underscored in a statement on behalf of the EU.
Expressing its solidarity with France, the EU called on Iran to bring those responsible for these acts to justice and to fully abide by its international commitments.
According to France, the diplomats were detained without reason for several hours and questioned because of their mission to support Iranian civil society. One of them was reportedly assaulted. The Secretary-General of the Quai d’Orsay had summoned the Iranian chargé d’affaires in Paris, on 21 July, to denounce those detentions. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
