On Tuesday 28 July, the European Commission launched a public consultation on its draft revision of the guidelines governing State aid for regional development and territorial cohesion, with a view to their application for the 2028-2034 period. Interested parties may submit their comments until 30 September.
The revision is intended to update the criteria for identifying areas eligible for regional aid on the basis of the latest socio-economic data. The Commission guidelines define the criteria that Member States should use to identify the areas that may receive regional aid. These areas are approved by the Commission in the regional aid ‘maps’. The current maps expire at the end of 2027.
The Commission now intends to take account of the specific difficulties faced by the EU’s eastern regions bordering Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. The revised guidelines are due to be adopted by the end of the year in order to give Member States time to prepare their new maps.
