The European Commission Executive Vice-President, Teresa Ribera, has rejected criticism voiced by Google of the Commission decision requiring the group to open certain Android functionalities to rival artificial intelligence services and share its search data, citing privacy protection and security concerns (see EUROPE 13911/9).
“It is important to ensure privacy protection and security. (…) The real question is whether this argument is being used to prevent other players from accessing data that is already anonymised and managed in a very secure way”, Teresa Ribera said on Friday 17 July.
She recalled that the Commission had been working on this issue “for a long time” with Google and stressed the safeguards provided for in its technical specifications. “We will assess, on a case-by-case basis, jointly with Google, whether an actor wishing to access this data is likely to pose a potential security risk”, she specified.
