16/07/2026 (Agence Europe) – The President of the European Council, António Costa, announced on X, on Wednesday 15 July, that there would be a “forthcoming debate on artificial intelligence at the European Council”. “Human-centred artificial intelligence can represent a tremendous opportunity for Europe, its prosperity and its well-being, provided that we prepare for it”, he said, stressing that “the European Union must increase its digital sovereignty, facilitate investment and promote lifelong learning, while protecting minors and preserving our values”. The discussion will take place “at one of the next European Council meetings this year”, a source close to António Costa told Agence Europe. The European Commission presented a package on technological sovereignty (see EUROPE 13880/1), as well as an action plan on cybersecurity and artificial intelligence aimed at reducing the EU’s dependencies on third countries (see EUROPE 13904/16, 13902/7).
