Green light for Spanish direct aid scheme for road transport companies

29/06/2026 (Agence Europe)On Monday 29 June the European Commission approved a Spanish scheme worth €402 million aimed at supporting road transport companies facing a surge in fuel prices, in line with the ‘METSAF’, which allows Member States to help certain sectors affected by the war in the Middle East (see EUROPE 13859/1). For beneficiaries eligible under an existing Spanish diesel tax refund scheme for professionals, the aid, which will take the form of direct grants, may cover up to 70% of additional fuel costs over the period March-June 2026. For companies not eligible for this tax scheme, the aid will either be capped at €50,000 per company or cover up to 70% of the additional fuel costs incurred over the period concerned. According to the Commission, the Spanish scheme is necessary, appropriate and proportionate. (MB)
