29/06/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 29 June, the Council of the European Union, under the Cyprus Presidency, adopted on a recommendation on integrated management of wildfire risks, based on the strategy presented by the European Commission last March (see EUROPE 13836/6). This plan, which covers the entire ‘disaster cycle’ (prevention, preparedness, response and recovery), had been drawn up after a record summer in 2025, when more than one million hectares burned across the continent. It encourages Member States to optimise land management, make better use of satellite monitoring systems and increase the interoperability of their response teams. “Wildfire risk is no longer a challenge for a few countries, but a European challenge”, recalled Constantinos Ioannou, the Cypriot interior minister, adding that “investing in prevention and preparedness today is essential to protecting lives, communities and ecosystems tomorrow”.
