29/06/2026 (Agence Europe) – The European Union expressed its concern before the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday 29 June over the continuing human rights violations in Burundi, despite some progress such as the release of certain political prisoners. The Union denounced arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, acts of torture, sexual violence, as well as violations of freedom of expression and of the press, often attributed to the security forces and the Imbonerakure movement. The Burundian authorities are being called on to fight impunity, to cooperate with the International Criminal Court and to authorise the reopening of the United Nations Human Rights Office in the country. The EU also urged the Burundian authorities to grant unhindered access to the UN Special Rapporteur. (BD)
