22/05/2026 (Agence Europe) – The Renew Europe coordinator in the European Parliament’s ITRE committee, Christophe Grudler, urged the European Commission to present a proposal by the end of May on the future use of the 2 GHz mobile satellite services (MSS) spectrum, in order to leave “sufficient time” to the co-legislators before the current authorisation system expires in May 2027, so as to “guarantee legal certainty and preserve Europe’s strategic interests in this critical area”. In a letter dated Wednesday 20 May and addressed to Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen and Commissioner for Defence Andrius Kubilius, he argues that this spectrum should be assigned “to European secure connectivity capacities, notably under the IRIS² secure connectivity programme, for both governmental and commercial services”, while guaranteeing “competitive calls for tender under IRIS² for all European commercial players”.
