21/05/2026 (Agence Europe) – The European Parliament, meeting in plenary session, approved on Thursday 21 May the opening of negotiations with the Council on the revision of the EU rules on periodic roadworthiness tests for motor vehicles and light commercial vehicles, by 369 votes in favour, 126 against and 84 abstentions. In line with the vote in the Committee on Transport and Tourism at the beginning of May (see EUROPE 13862/19), MEPs want to offer drivers more options for having their vehicle tested, but do not support the proposal to shorten the interval between roadworthiness tests for cars and vans over ten years old. The rapporteur, Jens Gieseke (EPP, German), will lead the discussions during the negotiations with the EU Council. (JV)
