MEPs called, on Thursday 21 May, for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners in Iran.
In the resolution it adopted (516 votes in favour, 14 against and 39 abstentions), the European Parliament calls for those responsible for the violence committed against the Iranian people to be held accountable. It therefore calls on the EU to strengthen sanctions against Iranian officials responsible for the repression, notably the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and entities linked to the Supreme Leader. Members of the IRGC and their families should be banned from entering the EU, the MEPs say.
In addition, in their view, the Member States should close Iranian diplomatic missions involved in transnational repression.
The European Parliament also calls on the Member States to ensure that the United Nations fact-finding mission — according to which the oppression exercised by the Iranian government amounts to crimes against humanity — receives sufficient resources, to share information with it, and to establish a tribunal for Iran in order to seek accountability and exercise universal jurisdiction before European courts.
