EU gives green light to €1.5 billion in aid for farmers in Andalusia and Extremadura

On Monday 11 May, the European Commission authorised, under EU State aid rules, a Spanish scheme worth €1.5 billion to support farmers affected by a series of adverse weather events in the regions of Andalusia and Extremadura between 10 November 2025 and 9 February 2026.

Severe flooding affected an area of over 100,000 km² (more than 20% of Spain) in Andalusia and Extremadura. These floods led to the destruction of crops, material damage to property and means of production, and an increase in operating costs.

Aid will take the form of direct grants covering up to 100% of eligible costs, in particular material damage and loss of income resulting from the total or partial destruction of agricultural production or agricultural production assets. The scheme will remain in force until 31 December 2026.

According to the Commission, the Spanish authorities have officially recognised this event as a natural disaster and have demonstrated the existence of a “direct causal link” between the flooding and the damage suffered by farmers. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
