Some 60 MEPs call on EU to put pressure on Israel to allow journalists free access to Gaza

07/05/2026 (Agence Europe)On Thursday 7 May, 61 MEPs called on the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the EU High Representative, Kaja Kallas, to “take urgent steps to increase political pressure on Israel to grant independent access of foreign journalists to Gaza”. In their letter, the Greens/EFA, S&D, The Left, EPP and Renew Europe MEPs point out that “independent access is an internationally accepted principle of war reporting”. “This sets a damaging precedent if banning a free press from conflict becomes an uncontested practice. Our right to access info is being restricted”, they explain. MEPs therefore call on Mrs von der Leyen and Mrs Kallas to make access for foreign journalists a key demand in bilateral relations with Israel and for all possible diplomatic and political means to be used to ensure that this is achieved.
