On Tuesday 5 May, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service strongly condemned Iran’s unprovoked missile and drone strikes against the EU’s “strategic partners” in the Gulf. Iran launched strikes against the United Arab Emirates and Oman, the first since the ceasefire between Tehran and Washington.
“We call on Iran to immediately cease these attacks in blatant violation of international law and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries in the region, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which must be fully implemented”. the spokesperson stressed in a statement.
In his view, security in Europe and the Gulf is “interlinked”. “The European Union will continue to engage with partners in the region to contribute to de-escalation and regional stability”.
The spokesperson reiterated that the EU was ready to contribute to all diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and finding a lasting solution to end the hostilities, prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and put an end to its destabilising activities.
