At their 17th meeting on Tuesday 5 May, the members of the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee called for the opening of all the clusters of negotiating chapters for Moldova’s accession to the EU by the end of the year.
“We have asked the EU Council to open negotiations officially and without delay for all the accession clusters, starting with the fundamental values during the Cyprus Presidency. The other five clusters should be open by the end of the year”, explained Committee co-chair Dan Barna (Renew Europe, Romanian).
The Moldovan co-chair of the Committee, Marcel Spătari, pointed out that his country was already making progress with its reforms in all the clusters of chapters to prepare his country for accession. Chișinău’s goal is to join the EU in 2028. According to Mr Spătari, there are already more than 300 draft laws in preparation to bring Moldovan legislation into line with EU law by 2026. “We are talking about a considerable volume of texts that we plan to transpose into our legislation. We therefore need the support of political forces and civil society in this respect”, he added.
MEPs also asked the European Commission to step up its technical support for Moldovan institutions. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
