On Tuesday 31 March, the Renew Europe, Socialists and Democrats, Greens/EFA and The Left groups sent a formal letter to the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, demanding “immediate sanctions” in the face of the outbursts that followed the adoption of the negotiating mandate on the return of irregular migrants (see EUROPE 13837/1).
The signatories particularly condemn the comments made by Charlie Weimers (ECR, Swedish), who on X celebrated the start of the “era of deportations”. A phrase described as a “shocking example of incitement to hate” because of its obvious link to the Holocaust.
The letter also points to massive insults directed at certain MEPs on social networks and criticises the far right for “disrupting” the plenary vote.
In view of these incidents, the groups are urging the President to act on the basis of Rules 10 and 11 of the European Parliament’s Rules of Procedure. They point out that such behaviour “undermines the dignity of this House” and jeopardises the safety of staff, denouncing a “waning” culture of respectful political debate.
