On Wednesday 1 April, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) announced that it had asked the Greek Parliament to waive the immunity of eleven MPs in an investigation into alleged fraud involving EU agricultural subsidies. Five former members of parliament are also being targeted. The investigation, which relates to events in 2021, concerns a system involving public officials from the Greek Payment and Control Agency for Guidance and Guarantee Community Aid (OPEKEPE). Suspected offences include breach of trust, computer fraud and false declarations aimed at obtaining European funds. In addition, the involvement of a former minister and a deputy minister of agriculture is suspected. In accordance with the Greek Constitution, this information has been transmitted to Parliament, which limits the action of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. The people concerned are presumed innocent. (NP)
