20/02/2026 (Agence Europe) – In response to the US Supreme Court’s ruling on Friday 20 February that US tariffs were illegal, a spokesman for the European Commission, Olof Gill, said that he was “in close contact with the US administration as we seek clarity on the steps they intend to take in response to this ruling”. He also pointed out that businesses on both sides of the Atlantic depended on stable and predictable trade relations. “We therefore continue to advocate for low tariffs and to work towards reducing them,” he insisted. Following the Trump administration’s threats of a tariff hike in April 2025, the EU negotiated a 15% ceiling in the summer, which applies to almost all exports originating in the Union. (PLD)
