Ursula von der Leyen calls for mutual defence clause to be “brought to life”

16/02/2026 (Agence Europe) – In a speech delivered in Munich on Saturday 14 February, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the time had “come to bring Europe’s mutual defence clause to life”. “Mutual defence is not optional for the EU. It is an obligation within our own Treaty – Article 42(7)”, she reminded everyone.
