Geostrategic Europe Taskforce says Europe has capacity to hold its own against Chinese and American giants

A report by the Geostrategic Europe Taskforce hosted by theJacques Delors Institute, which was published on Friday 13 February on the fringes of the Munich Security Conference, identifies ways in which the EU can protect its geostrategic interests in relation to China and the United States.

According to the analysis, there are “41 critical chokepoints where China depends on the EU for more than 80% of its imports” such as medical technologies, specialised machinery for agriculture, or even industrial processing.

It then lists 67 products for which the United States imports more than 80% from the EU – machinery, basic chemicals and pharmaceutical inputs.

The report also recognises that Europe’s influence can be considerably amplified “through strategic coalitions with like-minded middle powers”. It can also promote decarbonisation as a “renewed power model”.

We have to stop playing down our strengths. From engineering and clean technologies to pharmaceutical molecules, the EU is stronger than it thinks”, said Jonathan Barth, author of the report.
