09/02/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 9 February, the European Commission opened a public consultation to define a legal framework for the use of international carbon credits to help meet the EU’s 2040 climate target (see EUROPE 13770/1). This consultation invites stakeholders to comment on the conditions, quality guarantees and potential integration of these credits after 2030. The contributions received will be useful in drawing up the rules and legal provisions that could govern the recognition and use of high-quality international credits as a complement to internal EU reductions. These consultations, due by 4 May, will contribute to the preparation of the legislative proposals for the fourth quarter of this year and will complement the reflections on the flexibilities of the post-2030 climate framework.
