Affordable energy prices must be main objective of future electrification plan, according to energy-intensive industries

09/02/2026 (Agence Europe)In a joint statement on Thursday 5 February (https://aeur.eu/f/kn9 ), an Alliance of energy-intensive European industries warned that the high cost of electricity was jeopardising the electrification and competitiveness of European industry. This subject will be discussed by European leaders at an informal retreat on Thursday 12 February (see other news). The Alliance, made up of 13 industry players, believes in particular that the future ‘EU Electrification Action Plan’ should aim to re-establish competitive electricity prices, rather than setting electrification targets. The signatories therefore support a reference price of €50/MWh (defined by the State Aid Framework of the Clean Industrial Deal) as the maximum total cost of electricity for industry. “The success of the Electrification Action Plan will be assessed against its capacity to bring industrial electricity costs in the EU closer to the €50/MWh threshold – rather than targeting a percentage of electrification”, summarises the Alliance.
