09/02/2026 (Agence Europe) – During the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Monday 9 February, the Committee on International Trade (INTA) announced, as planned, the referral of safeguard measures for the European steel market to inter-institutional negotiations with the EU Council, which has already adopted its position on the text. Brought to the European Parliament by rapporteur Karin Karlsbro (Renew Europe, Swedish), the text supports new tariff quotas and a 50% tariff for imports outside the quotas (see EUROPE 13795/4). Under the procedure, however, European Parliament members or political groups have the opportunity to submit a written request by midnight on Tuesday 10 February to ask that the text be referred back to the interinstitutional negotiations and still be put to the vote in plenary. If no request is submitted, the co-legislators will be able to begin negotiations, with the first political “trilogue” potentially taking place on 23 or 27 February, according to various sources.
