Analysis by Générations Futures, a member of the PAN Europe network, shows that 49 synthetic pesticides would receive unlimited approval if the proposal on the ‘omnibus’ simplification of food safety rules were to come into force on 1 January 2027, these NGOs warned on Thursday 5 February.
Générations Futures has attempted to identify the active substances whose approval has recently been renewed and which will automatically see their approval period become unlimited when the text comes into force.
Article 27a of the proposed regulation makes the approval period for all active substances approved at the time of entry into force of the regulation unlimited, with exceptions (see EUROPE 13794/4).
After analysing the status of the 421 approved active substances listed in the European database, Générations Futures concludes that 49 synthetic substances would benefit from unlimited approval, without any additional assessment to support this decision scientifically. The substances concerned include glyphosate and acetamiprid, on which the European Commission hopes to make savings of at least €605,500 and €176,100 respectively, as indicated in its working document.
