On Thursday 5 February, the European Commission presented a new ‘toolbox’ for submarine cable safety, including risk mitigation measures and a list of Cable Projects of European interest (CPEI).
It also amended the digital work programme of the ‘Connecting Europe Facility’ (CEF) to allocate €347 million to strategic submarine cable projects, including a call for projects worth €20 million, opened on the same day, to strengthen Europe’s repair capacities, according to a press release.
This ‘toolbox’ sets out six strategic measures and four technical and support measures to improve the safety of submarine cable infrastructures. It is based on an October 2025 risk assessment.
The list of 13 CPEI domains for public funding provides for three five-year phases, up to 2040. The €20 million call for projects, launched on 5 February, is designed to fund adaptable modules for repairing submarine cables.
They will be deployed in ports or shipyards to rapidly restore submarine cable services, the press release adds.
