04/02/2026 (Agence Europe) – On 5 March in Luxembourg, the Court of Justice of the European Union will examine the End the Cage Age citizens’ initiative aimed at banning cage farming, announced the NGO Compassion in World Farming on Wednesday 4 February. The European Commission undertook in 2021 to propose legislation by the end of 2023, a commitment that has not been kept. NGOs are now calling for a clear timetable to put an end to cage farming for all species. Annamaria Pisapia, head of Compassion in World Farming Italy, said that this hearing “will give us the opportunity to explain in detail how the Commission’s inaction is prolonging the suffering of millions of animals and threatening participatory democracy”. The Commission is expected to present a proposal in 2026 (see EUROPE 13615/7). (LC)
