On Tuesday 3 February, the three Belgian members of the EPP group in the European Parliament - Wouter Beke, Liesbet Sommen and Pascal Arimont - launched an “urgent call” to the European Commission for concrete, short-term measures to address the crisis in the European chemical sector.
“Thousands of jobs are at stake”, warn Wouter Beke, Liesbet Sommen and Pascal Arimont in a press release.
In their letter, MEPs call for tangible improvements in the chemicals sector over the next 12 to 18 months, in particular by: - rapid relief from high energy prices; - a reduction in cumulative regulatory pressure and high carbon costs; - targeted incentives to stimulate demand for European and low-carbon products; - a firm approach to global overcapacity and unfair, state-supported import pressure.
If no action is taken, the three MEPs warn that the European chemicals sector will be weakened, leading to de-industrialisation, structural EU dependence on imports and carbon leakage.
