On Tuesday 27 January, the European Women’s Lobby (EWL) launched its ‘Parity Now!’ campaign, calling for the institutionalisation of strict parity between women and men in all spheres of decision-making at national, European and international level.
As EWL points out, according to data from the European Institute for Gender Equality (https://aeur.eu/f/kjq ), although women and girls make up half the population, they are still under-represented in places of power: in the European Union in 2024, they accounted for only 35% of ministers, 33% of members of national parliaments and 32% of members of regional and local assemblies.
In a letter sent to 1,381 representatives in 46 Council of Europe member states, the organisation calls on governments to modify their institutional frameworks, allocate funding and guarantee parity in all sectors.
The answers, or lack of them, will be made public around 8 March, International Women’s Day. (Original version in French by Nithya Paquiry)
