Brussels, 26/01/2026 (Agence Europe) – At the meeting of European fisheries ministers on Monday 26 January, Ireland, supported by Poland and Latvia, denounced (https://aeur.eu/f/kf1 ) the agreement reached at the end of 2025 by four Coastal States on a total allowable catch (TAC) for mackerel that disregards the advice of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) and excludes the EU (see EUROPE 13779/12). The countries concerned have warned of the serious risks to the sustainability of the stock and the negative economic impact on the EU fishing industry. The European Commission has been asked to use existing legal tools, in particular Regulation 1026/2012 on certain measures directed against countries allowing unsustainable fishing, and to put in place emergency support measures under the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) to offset the low fishing opportunities forecast for 2026.
