Martin Schirdewan and Terry Reintke see OECD agreement on minimum corporate taxation as a tool to counter Donald Trump

20/01/2026 (Agence Europe)At a press conference in Strasbourg on Tuesday 20 January, the German MEP and Co-Chair of The Left Group, Martin Schirdewan, said that the European Commission should “explore different options”, including the tax issue, to counter US President Donald Trump’s blackmail over Greenland (see other news). “The debate on a European digital tax is more relevant than ever and must be brought to a conclusion, especially as the OECD agreement on the international taxation of digital companies, although concluded, excludes American companies - an absurd situation”, he stressed (see EUROPE 13779/19). His compatriot and co-president of the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament, Terry Reintke, made the same argument. “The EU needs to stand up, and we have tools: (...) support the introduction of a digital tax, knowing that the tech oligarchs are afraid of this”, she stressed.
