20/01/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday, 20 January, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico took advantage of the fact that an informal summit will be convened on 22 January to address the transatlantic crisis concerning Greenland to call for a “4–5 year suspension on the application of the emissions trading mechanism” (ETS). In a letter addressed to Ursula von der Leyen and published on X, the Slovak believes that the “era of gross violations of international law and the collapse of the world order” is severely testing the EU’s strength and capabilities. And one of the factors affecting the EU’s ability to exert sufficient influence is “our competitiveness”. Suspending the ETS “would lead to a significant revival and boost for the strategic industrial sectors”. Faced with [the fact that] “the issue of high electricity prices is becoming increasingly prominent in more and more EU Member States, I expect [to see] other alternatives to reducing extremely high electricity prices emerging,” he adds.
