The transport ministers of fifteen Member States – Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain – called for an administrative simplification of the regulatory framework for civilian drones at the Council meeting on Thursday 4 December.
Stakeholders in the sector are faced with complex and onerous risk analyses in order to obtain flight authorisations. “Our objective is therefore clear: to unleash the potential of fifteen Member States call for simplification of regulatory framework for civilian drones civil drone-related services by streamlining procedures and adapting a sometimes disproportionate regulatory framework, without ever compromising on safety”, said Belgian Jean-Luc Crucke.
The ministers are proposing to introduce an identification system for drones. “Such a system is essential if we are to be able to distinguish quickly between legitimate uses and potential threats, and thus neutralise the latter”, argued Mr Crucke.
Apóstolos Tzitzikóstas, European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, replied that he intended to launch a review of the European strategy in early 2026 (see EUROPE 13764/11). He would like to check whether the text, which dates from the end of 2022 (see EUROPE 13073/9), actually needs to be adjusted.
