On Monday 20 October, the European Parliament decided to add two debates to the agenda for the plenary session taking place from 20 to 23 October in Strasbourg.
At the start of the plenary session, the Renew Europe group in the European Parliament secured the addition, for Wednesday afternoon, of a debate on a just peace in Ukraine, following recent diplomatic developments. By announcing that a summit would be held in Budapest between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has once again taken his European partners by surprise.
The S&D group, for its part, obtained the addition, on Tuesday afternoon, of a debate (Council and Commission statement) on the intimidation of investigative journalists. According to one MEP, twenty-nine Italian journalists are currently living under state protection because of death threats from gangs linked to organised crime. The group mentioned the explosion of a bomb outside the home of Sigfrido Ranucci, an investigative journalist.
Finally, the European Parliament rejected the ECR group’s request to include a debate on cultural heritage on the agenda, following the theft of jewellery from the Louvre Museum in Paris.
Arrivals. The appointment of Marie-Pierre Vedrenne as Minister Delegate to the Minister of the Interior in France has freed up a place on the French delegation of the Renew Europe group, which is now occupied by Jérémy Decerle, MEP between 2019 and 2024. Antonín Staněk (PfE, Czech) is also joining Parliament. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
