29/09/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 29 September, the European Commission announced its decision not to register a European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) entitled ‘Ethical selection of European representatives’, on the grounds that the initiative does not meet the required regulatory conditions. According to the EU institution, only ECIs calling on it to propose legal acts aimed at implementing European treaties can be registered, whereas the ECI organisers are requesting a recommendation to be addressed to Member States and political parties on minimum ethical standards for selecting candidates for European and national elections. The ECI organisers are also calling for a voluntary code of conduct to be drawn up at EU level, as well as a communication campaign. This refusal to register is the second since Regulation 2019/788 governing the ECI came into force in January 2020, according to the Commission. (MB)
