Council of EU approves regulation improving collection of statistics on population and housing in EU

29/09/2025 (Agence Europe)On Monday 29 September, the Council of the European Union adopted new rules guaranteeing “the completeness, coherence and comparability of statistics collected on population and housing at EU level”, according to a press release. The regulation aims to improve the overall quality of statistics on population and housing by introducing a harmonised definition of the term ‘population’ (specifying, for example, the definition of a household, habitual residence, immigrant or emigrant), facilitating access to data sources and streamlining and improving statistical production in this respect. The aim of the regulation is to “ensure [the provision of] complete, coherent and comparable statistics in a timely manner, [to] improve the quality of population data [and to ensure that statistics are] flexible enough to adapt to changing policy needs and the use of new sources”. The European Parliament must also adopt this regulation. Further information: https://aeur.eu/f/inm (SP)
