03/09/2025 (Agence Europe) – The Left Group in the European Parliament has initiated proceedings to table a motion of censure against the ‘von der Leyen II’ Commission (see EUROPE 13694/31), two months after the European Parliament rejected an initial motion tabled by a Romanian conservative. In order to be valid, the motion must collect at least 72 signatures, i.e. 26 signatures more than the number of elected members of the radical left group. Between now and Wednesday 10 September, The Left will try to convince elected members of the Greens/EFA and S&D groups, but they are refusing to cooperate with the far right. A vote by MEPs is not expected to take place until the first plenary session in October. Criticising the trade agreement with the United States approved by the European Commission, “the silence and connivance over the genocide in Gaza” and the EU institution’s stubbornness in encouraging Ukraine to keep fighting the war, Italy’s ‘5 Star Movement’ said on Wednesday 3 September that it was time to send the European Commission home.
