At the second General Assembly of the European Industrial Alliance for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) on Monday 1 September, the European Commissioner for Energy, Dan Jørgensen, announced that a call for evidence for SMRs would be launched, supplemented by a stakeholder forum “later in the year”.
He indicated that the aim was to “broaden the dialogue” beyond the 350-plus current members of the Alliance (https://aeur.eu/f/i86 ).
He also welcomed the fact that the Alliance’s action plan, which will be published shortly, will provide “crucial information” for the Commission as it draws up its strategy for SMRs in Europe, which it intends to finalise by the end of the year or early 2026.
Before that, “we will be inviting European, national and local political leaders as well as representatives of international and non-governmental organisations”, explained the Commissioner on the subject of the forthcoming forum.
He also pointed out that SMR capacity projections for 2050 varied between 17 GW and 53 GW. (Original version in French by Pauline Denys)
