On Tuesday 2 September, the European Commission released emergency funding of €1 million to meet the most urgent needs of people affected by the magnitude 6 earthquake that shook the provinces of Kunar, Jalalabad and Nangarhar in north-eastern Afghanistan on Sunday evening. This funding is intended for the EU’s partner organisations on the ground.
In addition, 130 tonnes of relief supplies from EU humanitarian stocks have been mobilised.
“Two EU-funded humanitarian flights are set to arrive in Kabul later this week”, said a Commission spokesperson at midday on Tuesday. The equipment includes shelters, clothing, medical supplies and water purification equipment.
The EU’s Copernicus satellite service was also activated to produce emergency maps, which are used to supply aid.
The earthquake killed more than 1,400 people and injured more than 3,100, according to an official update on Tuesday, AFP reported midday. (Original version in French by Bernard Denuit)
