25/06/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 24 June, Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister, Simon Harris, announced the adoption of a bill to ban imports of products manufactured in Israeli settlements. Such an initiative is not, a priori, legal under the EU’s exclusive competence for trade policy. Any measure adopted by a Member State must be analysed by the Commission before adoption to check its compatibility with trade rules. This work must therefore be undertaken by Dublin before the text is adopted. Last week, nine EU member states - including Ireland - called on the European Commission to take action on this trade issue too (see EUROPE 13663/21). (LM)
