24/06/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 24 June, the European Parliament’s Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) approved (35 votes in favour, 2 against and 2 abstentions) the agreement with the EU Council to revise and update the mandate of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). Reached in May (see EUROPE 13644/11), this agreement should strengthen EMSA’s role. It will have to carry out more missions in a number of areas, such as preventing and combating pollution, decarbonisation, surveillance and raising awareness of the maritime world. It will also provide assistance for the implementation of the ‘FuelEU Maritime’ regulation on infrastructure for alternative fuels (see EUROPE 13561/8) and the extension of the ‘Emissions Trading System’ (‘ETS’) to maritime transport (see EUROPE 13618/18). For its part, the EU Council still has to approve the agreement. Read the text: https://aeur.eu/f/hj3 (AD)
