On Monday 16 June, negotiators from the European Parliament and the Council of the EU reached an agreement on a regulation to improve cooperation between national data protection authorities when applying the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in cross-border cases. The main aim is to streamline administrative procedures.
For example, the regulation will speed up the processing of cross-border complaints lodged by citizens or organisations under the GDPR, as well as follow-up investigations.
As regards the admissibility of complaints relating to cross-border data processing, these will be judged on the basis of the same information, regardless of which country they come from.
The EU Council and the European Parliament have also agreed on a mechanism for resolving complaints more quickly. This allows data protection authorities to resolve a case before triggering the standard procedures for handling a cross-border complaint - in other words, before involving other national authorities.
