MEPs feel future CAP presentation should not coincide with post-2027 MFF presentation

The European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture is concerned that legislative proposals on the future common agricultural policy (CAP) and those on the 2028–2034 Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) are scheduled to be simultaneously presented on 16 July.

In a letter sent to the European Commission on Thursday, 12 June, Veronika Vrecionová (ECR, Czech), who chairs the European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture, is of the opinion that the legislative proposals on the future CAP should be presented after, and not at the same time as, those on the next MFF (see EUROPE 13652/4).

An own-initiative report on the future CAP is in the process of being adopted in the European Parliament. “This input provides the Commission with a valuable indication of the political direction and priorities likely to emerge in the legislative process. It is therefore important that this reflection is concluded and duly considered before the formal launch of new legislative proposals”, the letter stresses (see EUROPE 13653/9).

Furthermore, the committee chair warns that given the work in progress on legislative files such as the reform of the common market organisation (CMO) and the CAP simplification package, a comprehensive reform of the CAP at this stage would put a strain on institutions’ and stakeholders’ work capacity.
