EU and Japan hold their first dialogue on security and defence at Director-General level

The European Union and Japan have agreed to strengthen their cooperation on security and defence issues as part of a dialogue on the subject, which took place on Wednesday 11 June in Brussels.

The dialogue was co-chaired by Shuji Yuge, Director General for International Affairs at the Japanese Ministry of Defence, Seiichiro Taguchi, Deputy Director General and Ambassador at the European Affairs Bureau of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Benedikta von Seherr-Thoss, Director General for Peace, Security and Defence at the European External Action Service (EEAS).

The two sides discussed maritime security, space security, foreign information manipulation and interference, disarmament and non-proliferation, as well as issues relating to women, peace and security.

This dialogue takes place within the framework of the EU-Japan Security and Defence Partnership, signed in November 2024. It comes shortly before the EU-Japan summit, which is expected to focus more broadly on support for multilateralism, geopolitical challenges – in particular the war in Ukraine – and economic security.
