02/05/2025 (Agence Europe) – Germany’s future Minister of the Interior, Alexander Dobrindt, wants to rapidly implement measures against irregular migration, such as stricter internal border controls, German media reported on Friday 2 May, citing an interview given to Süddeutsche Zeitung. Mr Dobrindt has already said that he is in talks with European partners on this subject. “Decisions will be made immediately”, said the future minister, who will take office on 6 May, adding that Germany’s borders needed to be controlled more closely and that the reform of the ‘Asylum and Migration Pact’ was progressing too slowly. He also explained that reducing political and social polarisation in Germany would only succeed “if we get illegal immigration under control”. Germany already applies controls at land borders with France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland. (SP)
